White House Asks Pride NW to Share President’s Pride Message
By Erin Rook, PQ Monthly
Every year President Barack Obama has been in office, he has declared June “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.” He is only the second president to make such a proclamation (President Bill Clinton declared June “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month” in 2000). This year, President Obama made sure the message reached the Portland LGBTQ community (in case we weren’t paying attention). According to the folks at Pride NW, the White House called to ask them to publicize his Pride Month greeting during Portland Pride week.
In his message, President Obama calls attention to LGBTQ activists like Harvey Milk, as well as “the unsung heroes, the millions of LGBT Americans for whom everyday acts have required extraordinary courage.” He gave the LGBTQ community and big ol’ pat on the back, crediting us with “bend[ing] the arc of the moral universe towards justice.” (Hey, thanks Mr. President!)

I’m wholeheartedly in favor of his message being publicized! Everyone needs to know that President Barack Obama is on our side. It is critical, both for the LGBT community and the country as a whole, that he be re-elected to a second term.
President Obama has been good for the LGBT community. Granted, he hasn’t turned water into wine—but his achievements are undeniable. We all know a Romney administration would stall progress on the federal level for years.
If we want to ensure we gain equal protection of the law, one of the best ways we can do that in 2012 is to re-elect the President and to deliver Congress back to the Democratic Party. Only a Democratic Congress will pass ENDA, the repeal of DOMA, and other critical bills. Only Obama will sign those bills into law.
More importantly, now that the Proposition 8 case is headed to the Supreme Court, we need a president who will appoint fair-minded justices in case any of them retire. Obama has a proven track record, having already appointed Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan—and only Obama will balance the dangerously conservative Supreme Court.
There are so many other reasons President Obama should serve a second term, but I’ll leave it off here.
