Publisher and Owner, PQ Monthly & El Hispanic News
Melanie started PQ Monthly in January 2012 to fill a void in the LGBTQ communities of Oregon and SW Washington. Drawing on her experience as publisher-owner of bilingual monthly El Hispanic News (the nation’s #1 bilingual monthly newspaper for seven consecutive years) and her connections through activism and leadership in the LGBTQ community, Melanie launched the first issue of PQ Monthly and its daily website the following month.
In addition to being the principal owner of the publications’ parent company, Brilliant Media, LLC., Melanie is also a partner and senior strategist for Su Público, the only full-service multicultural ad agency serving Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.
Melanie received CAUSA’s 2011 Equality Achievement Award, was profiled in Basic Rights Oregon’s recent “Our Families” campaign and won two Gold Medals from the National Association of Hispanic Publications for her partnership with Pride NW and in the development and delivery of the “Pride Guide” in 2009 and 2010.
When Melanie’s not busy making connections in the community, she can be found speaking to business and community organizations about leadership, media, emerging markets, and diversity; riding her Harley-Davidson Road King around Oregon and Washington; or spending quality time with her partner Gabriela and their puppies.
