I don’t know about you, but I love a woman who sports. I don’t personally sport, but watching someone sport? Amazing. All the jumping and impressive ball work and the shorts? Sigh.

That’s why I always look forward to the Portland Women’s 3×3 Basketball Tournament. They are celebrating the seventh year Saturday, July 25 at Irving Park from 9am-5pm. The tournament is a benefit for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) which is the largest LGBT political and civil rights nonprofit organization in the United States with more than a million members and supporters. In the past six years they’ve raised and netted $30,000 for HRC. That is very impressive.

It’s a unique event, the only 3×3 women’s-only basketball tournament in the entire state. The amount of nonprofessional 3×3 women’s teams in the U.S. is almost nonexistent. It’s all inclusive of women of all ages, from 18 to 60+, and skill-level participation. If you are familiar with women’s basketball and 3×3 tournaments, having 30+ teams participate in a women’s only 3×3 basketball tournament is truly amazing.

If you’re thinking the participants are beautiful unicorns that don’t exist in real life, you are wrong.

THEY WANT YOU! (yes, you)

I don’t know if you know how sexy playing basketball and helping HRC is, but ask Shaley Howard, who is also on the newest billboard for the Portland Timbers. Not related, but the picture is amazing, you’ll have to agree. It’s not important for you to have a team; a team of four is standard, if you have three friends who want to basketball with you. If you’re a single, Shaley will help you find a team. You will have an amazing time because they are making this one of the best basketball tournaments ever.

Last year they had the Last Regiment Drum Corp perform, which was phenomenal. They also incorporated a “Spirit Award,” which goes to the team with the most creative name, uniform and overall enthusiasm, a 3-point contest, and Portland’s hottest DJ’s spinning all day.

Plus, this year they’ve added an Instagram photo contest, which will end at 5pm July 25, 2015. Tag #PDXWomens3x3 on Instagram. There will be two winners and the photos will be chosen based on originality and creativity that clearly shows your love of basketball, the tournament and equality. They’ll give cool swag for the winners.

They are also raffling off a 3-night stay in Puerto Vallarta in a boutique hotel in the romantic zone that includes breakfast and choice of two activities. It’s a retail value of $4,000! They are selling 200 tickets for $10.

So, either participate or enjoy the action from the sidelines. Either way, it promises to be a really great time. Head to the HRC’s site for more information.
