Pussy Riot by Igor Mukhin 500x337 Local Pussy Riot Solidarity Actions Happening FridayAt least three demonstrations are planned in Portland tomorrow in solidarity with embattled Russian punk collective Pussy Riot.

The feminist punk collective rose to international status last March after three women from the band were arrested for “hooliganism” during an improvised concert in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Allegations of harsh treatment while in custody and a risk of a seven-year jail sentence led to worldwide media attention, especially after the arrested Pussy Riot members issued their closing statements on August 8. As a result, rallies are planned worldwide for this Friday, coinciding with a Russian court ruling on whether the members of Pussy Riot will be sent to prison.

Portland will see at least three major demonstrations on behalf of the embattled punk collective. The Pussy Riot Solidarity Bike Ride kicks off at 5 PM Friday at Colonel Summers Park in SE Portland. Participants are encouraged to wear colorful dresses and brightly colored balaclavas (assuming the heat isn’t so intense as to preclude balaclavas) in a nod to Pussy Riot’s aesthetic while the ride takes to the streets in solidarity.

The Free Pussy Riot Global Day action is scheduled for 3 to 6 PM at Pioneer Courthouse Square in SW Portland. The Portland demonstration occurs in concert with demonstrations in 34 other major cities. “I will be there with my poodle wearing bright colors and perhaps tutus,” explains Facebook invite author Pamela Woods, “but it may be way too hot for ski masks.”

Finally, the Pussy Riot Verdict and Solidarity Reading occurs from 8:30 to 10 PM at Record Room (8 NE Killingsworth, Portland). “We will have a moment of solidarity and recognition for [Pussy Riot members] Maria Alyokhina, Yekaterina Samutsevich, and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova by reading the brilliant political statements they have made during the course of their trial, listening to music by Pussy Riot, watching some video footage, and most importantly, discussing the verdict that will be delivered earlier that day,” explains organizer Mary Christmas. Participants are encouraged to dress colorfully, and to arrive early to the event if they are interested in reading from the trial statements, making a statement of their own, or performing — there is likely to be a projector available, as well as a full PA system with mics.

Do you know of any other Pussy Riot solidarity actions occurring in Oregon or SW Washington? Will you be in attendance at any of the events? Tell us in the comments!
