‘HER’ COMES TO PARTY WITH PORTLAND WOMEN AND QUEERS THIS SUNDAY

By Shaley Howard, PQ Monthly

A good friend and I had this amazing idea a few years back of creating a dating app specifically for women with the idea of calling it scissr’s – yep scissr’s. We were frustrated seeing the number dating apps fashioned mainly towards straight people or gay men’s needs that didn’t really speak to us. But alas, the idea soon disappeared along with the countless dollar signs flashing in front of our eyes. Mainly because neither of us had the time but more importantly – we had no clue how to create and develop an app. Apparently that’s somewhat important.

The good news – there IS a social dating app specifically for women called Her and they’re bringing the party to Portland this Sunday, January 10th for a New Years Brunch complete with a Bloody Mary Bar, delicious foods and lots of women! Founded in London in 2013 by Robyn Exton, Her was originally designed as a social dating app for queer women. The alternatives on the market at the time were mainly designed for straight people and often didn’t reflect the way women interact. However, over the last couple years Her has become more than just a social dating app for women. They’ve expanded into a more community-oriented app with the focus of not just finding women dates but finding women community.

“We’re starting to throw events that help women in the Her community get together in their local area, to create fun spaces and great experiences. As a queer woman, it is sometimes hard to find a place to hang out with other queer women that aren’t club night, where it can be a bit harder to chat. Beyond just the normal dating pool, we share coming out stories, we share culture and jokes, and we all love the energy that get created with a large group of women in one space. That’s want we want these events to be, a place for women who like women to meet, socialize, share some food and drinks, and build our network and community.” – Commented Robyn Exton Creator of Her.

In addition, to other upcoming events in Austin Texas, New York, and San Francisco, Her’s most recent event called Her Autumn Party was held in London and was highly successful. Their goal is to continue expanding and bring regularly held events to local communities all over the world where queer women can meet other women with similar interests. And although Portland does enjoy a plethora of popular and fun queer events, there are many queer women who still struggle not only to find other women that they relate to but also finding places that are more conducive for engaging conversations and connection.

“It was really difficult when I was questioning. As a queer woman it is hard to find a place to hang out with other queer women, and for me, it is so exciting when I get to. Beyond just the normal dating pool, we share coming out struggles and stories, we share culture and jokes, and we all love the energy. That is what I want these events to be, a place for women who like women to meet, socialize, share some food and drinks, and build our network and community.” –remarked Exton.

This event is open to everyone – lesbian, bisexual, queer, ally, sister, brother, friend, roomie – everyone is welcome. And if you’re on the shy side and a bit uncomfortable with the idea of a big brunch with people you don’t know, relax. Her will have a whole team of women working as ambassadors to make sure everyone is having fun and feels welcome. There will also be interactive, fun games to get people socializing and relaxed not to mention an amazing Bloody Mary bar plus delicious food treats like chocolate French toast, apple fritters and curried tofu hash with sausage scramble. Yum.

The New Years Brunch will be at The Slide Inn located at 2348 Southeast Ankeny Street Portland, OR 97214 from 11am-1pm and is an 18+.
